Conversational Math Counts From the Start: Developing Number Sense in Young Children
This interactive workshop presents highly effective strategies to support caregivers as they tailor their interactive communications to children’s developmental level. . Beginning at birth, when understanding is in the precursor stage, infants and toddlers are developing approximate number sense and mathematical thinking, , with focus on sensory impressions about differences in quantity and magnitude based on sight, sound, smell, touch, including manipulation. By the time they enter preschool, young children need many positive, playful interactions and conversations about the math that is all around is to develop understanding of cardinality, number patterns, and rational counting that leads to future school success.

Presenters:
For well more than a decade, Mary and Jie-Qi along with other members of the Early Math Collaborative, have been actively engaged in working with early childhood caregivers and teachers of 0 to 5-year-olds in extended series of sessions that deepen participants’ own conceptual understanding of mathematics and that provide highly effective strategies for them to tailor to the capacities, interests, and needs of the specific children they work with. Their recently published book, Precursor Math Concepts: The wonder of mathematical worlds with infants and toddlers was recently published by Teachers College Press (2021).

For more than a decade, Mary Hynes-Berry and Jie-Qi Chen, along with Barbara Abel have been actively engaged in working with early childhood caregivers and teachers of 0 to 5 year olds in extended series of sessions that deepen participants’ own conceptual understanding of mathematics and that provide highly effective strategies for them to tailor to the capacities, interests, and needs of the specific children they work with. The presenters have grounded their program in the latest research on language and cognitive development of early mathematical thinking. This work lead to the publication of their ground-breaking book Precursor Math Concepts: The Wonder Mathematical Worlds with Infants and Toddlers; Teacher's College Press, 2021.
