Building from Children's Mathematical Brilliance - the case of counting

Counting is the foundation upon which number concepts are built, and learning to count with understanding is crucial for children’s future success in mathematics. Fortunately, young children’s intuitive ways of making sense of the complexities are quite powerful. This session will bring together research and practice in supporting mathematics learning that builds from what children know and can do.

Presenters:

Nick Johnson is an assistant professor in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University. His work focuses on how young children learn mathematics and how teachers recognize and build from children’s intuitive mathematical brilliance.
